The Music Department had a series of wonderful year-end recitals. Even with a three week break period, students managed to pull through and put on a great show. The highlight this year was seeing our advanced students perform their final pieces before departing for college. To add to the year-end festivities, we were proud to except Reggie Workman as the music artist-in-residence. Workman will begin giving workshops at HSA through the African-American Legacy Project.

All the World’s a Stage was an impressive showcase of our HSA prep students, ages 13-17. Beginning with a selection from A Midsummer Night’s Dream from high school prep student Nelaja Muhammad, the show led the audience through a number of theater styles. Advanced Musical Theater teacher Deborah Kym led Psalm Washington through a moving rendition of “Home” from The Wiz, and Will’s Playshop teacher Charles E. Gerber joined the class in a diverse selection of Shakespearean scenes. In the second act, Apprentice and Advanced Teen Ensemble, taught by Willie Teacher, presented Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe. A variety show of the African American experience, Colored Museum takes a satirical look at portrayals of Black culture.
